There was a discussion of the name in the introduction which gave an entirely incorrect impression that "belladonna" was a misspelling of the scientific name "bella-donna". However "belladonna" as the English language name for this plant predates Linnaeus' original work by 100 years and his Species Plantarum by 120 years. Therefore it is impossible for "belladonna," without the space, to be an incorrect rendering of the scientific name. Obviously "belladonna" is the English common name for Atropa bella-donna, and "belladonna" continues to be used, in English, as the common name for this plant.
It is clear that John Gerard is the source of "belladonna" as the common name, because his book has the first known use, his book was popular and infulential, and the common name, "dwale", for this plant is attested many times prior to his book and not at all a few decades later.
From the fact that Linnaeus used it as a two word speices name, we can deduce he took it from the original Italian text by Andrea Matthioli (1501 - ca. 1577) where Matthioli had it as herba bella donna. From my research it seems that Matthioli is accepted as the source that John Gerard got "belladonna" from. Nick Beeson (talk) 03:20, 19 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
